Parental Controls

It's becoming increasingly important that families and customers are provided some choice over Internet content filtering, especially for families with younger children who wish to restrict access to sexually explicit content.

Wessex Internet can provide an opt-in filtering service on our customer connections.

This service is based on DNS filtering. DNS is the system which converts a web address like into an IP address such as, this then allows your computer or device the information to route traffic from your device to the BBC website. Think of an IP address like a post code, and the web address like the full address. The post code is the important routing information, but the web address adds the human readable element to it.

With the DNS filtering service we can provide, when a user accesses a restricted website the DNS server returns an IP address that redirects them to a webpage informing them that this web page is blocked.

Filtering Options

The service Wessex Internet use is Norton ConnectSafe. Customers can alternatively use alternate DNS-based filtering services. OpenDNS provides such one.

There are three options for filtering:

  • A - Security (malware, phishing sites and scam sites)
  • B - Security + Pornography
  • C - Security + Pornography + Other

All policies block malware, phishing and scam sites.

Pornography includes sites that contain sexually explicit material.

Other includes sites that feature: mature content, abortion, alcohol, crime, drugs, file sharing, gambling, hate, suicide, tobacco or violence.

This service is free of charge and available to all residential customers.

Home Worker and all Business services are not allowed (due to Norton ConnectSafe limitations) at this time. We have alternative filtering options for business customers wishing web content filtering.

Enabling the service

Please contact us to enable to service and request the option you require.

As we need to apply the changes to your router which we manage on your behalf, this is a change that we must enable. If you are on a Home Worker account and therefore use your own router, you will have to change the DNS settings as we will most likely not have access to your router's configuration page. Please contact us so we can advise the right settings.
